Vazhaipoo usili is basically a South Indian dish, especially from Tamil Nadu. The word usili means broken or crumbled. There are so many Usili dishes here in Tamil Nadu. So, today I am going to show you the very tasty and nutrient-rich recipe of Vazhaipoo Usili. Also, the recipe is a good combination for gravies, curd rice, and rasam rice. And also, vazhaipoo (banana flower or banana blossom) was a good source of iron, calcium, fiber, potassium, and vitamins A, B, and E. So, I'll give step-by-step instructions in the below post.

Ingredients:

Chana gram dal      - 1/2 cup
Vazhaipoo              - 1 cup (finely chopped)
Onion                    - 1 medium size (finely chopped)
Dry chilies             - 4 nos
Turmeric powder    - 1/2 tsp
Mustard seeds        - 1 tsp
Cumin seeds          - 1 tsp
Salt                      - As per taste
Asafoetida             - 1/4 tsp
Oil                       - 2 tbsp
Curry leaves          - Handful

Instructions:

  • To begin, take chana gram dal and soak it for 15–20 minutes.

  • After 20 minutes, take a mixer jar and add soaked dal and dry chillies, and grind to a coarse consistency.

  • Then, take a mixing bowl and add coarse dal, vazhaipoo, and salt, and mix well.

  • After that, make the vazhaipoo mixture into the flattened dough. Then heat the idly vessel or steamer and place the vazhaipoo dough into the idly vessel. and steam for 5–10 minutes.

  • and then make the steamed vazhaipoo dough into a crumbled form.

  • Then heat a kadai and add oil. Once the oil gets heated, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, and onion. saute well.

  • Once the onion gets a golden brown colour, add steamed vazhaipoo dal, hing (asfoetida), turmeric, and salt, and sauté well for 5 minutes.

  • Finally, a healthy and tasty vazhaipoo usili is ready to serve. I hope everyone likes it.
